Sports picked up 3 well deserved points in the KPL on Saturday with victory against Holmesdale @ Oakley Road on the hottest day of the year so far.
The game started with both teams performing well but with the final ball missing. It was not until the 28th min when Sports almost breached the Holmesdale defence when the ball was cleared from the opposition’s goal mouth twice from a corner.
6mins later Holmesdale had their chance when a defensive lapse saw a Holmesdale forward shoot just wide.
On the 36th min Woodstock had a great opportunity to score when McDonald was in on goal but the resultant chip was well managed by the Holmesdale keeper.
The first half continued with chances for both teams but the score at half time remained 0-0.
At half-time Woodstock made two changes with Jon Neal and Josh Davidson coming on for Ben Jones and George Cameron with Hockey dropping back to centre-half. This sparked a change in the game which saw Woodstock keeping the greater possession.
On 49mins Woodstock won a throw-in near the Holmesdale corner flag. Baverstock threw the ball into the Holmesdale penalty area where it met the head of player-manager Ben Taylor. Taylor’s head fell to McDonald and from an awkward angle managed to strike the ball into the top right corner of the goal.
10mins later Woodstock found the net again when McDonald crossed the ball to Clark who ran with the ball towards the Holmesdale box before sweetly striking the ball passed the opposition keeper.
For the next half hour Holmesdale seemed depleted, whether it was from the 2-0 deficit or the extreme heat, Woodstock maintained possession and on 71mins almost went close again, a ball in from Emmerson meet the head of Baverstock but went just over the cross-bar.
Woodstock continued to press and in the last ten minutes just passed the ball around the pitch happily maintaining their lead under the burning rays.
